Aiken, Joan
Aiken, JoanJoan Aiken is the daughter of Conrad Aiken, author of several works of the macabre. Her mother educated her at home until she was twelve, when she went to a small progressive boarding school in Oxford.

She has worked for the BBC and the United Nations, and was feature editor for Argosy for five years. She began writing full time in the early 1960's.

She has written at least fifty books, three of which won the Guardian Award for Children's Literature. One of these, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase also won the Lewis Carroll Award, while Nightfall was honoured by the Mystery Writers of America.

She is married to the American painter Julius Goldstein. [edit]
