Robert Lynn Asprin, American science fiction and fantasy author, was most famous for his humorous MythAdventures and Phule’s Company series.
He was born in St, Johns, Michigan on 28 June 1946, attended the University of Michigan in 1964, and served in the US Army in 1965.
Asprin was always a fan of sf. He was active in science fiction fandom and in the early years of the Society for Creative Anachronism as “Yang the Nauseating”.
His first novel, The Cold Cash War, which is an expansion of a short story of the same name by Asprin, was published in 1977.
After this he and his first wife, Lynn Abbey, created and edited a series of shared world anthologies called Thieves’ World.
The MythAdventures series began in 1978 with the book Another Fine Myth and was followed in 1980 by Myth Conceptions. In total the heavily pun-driven series, which chronicles the comic adventures of Skeeve and Aahz, contains 19 titles.
Asprin created the “Phule” novels during the 90s. This humorous science fiction series follows Willard Phule, wealthy leader of a rag-tag company of the “Space Legion”, on his many adventures.
The 90s also saw a hiatus in the writing career of Robert Asprin as personal and financial problems took their toll. He had two books on The New York Times Best Seller list, which piqued the interest of fans (and the Internal Revenue Service), but at this point Asprin had not written in seven years. He eventually negotiated a deal with the IRS that encouraged him to return to writing.
After this Hiatus, in the late 90s and early 2000s, Asprin collaborated with several authors including Peter J Heck, Jody Lynn Nye and Linda Evans on continuations of the ‘Myth’ and ‘Phule’ series, as well as works in new series.
In 2008 Asprin died of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) at his home. A Terry Pratchett novel and his reading glasses were found next to him. [edit]
