Jean M Auel became a firmly established literary presence upon the publication of her first novel about intelligent Neanderthal people living in prehistoric times, The Clan of the Cave Bear. Published in 1980, it was later turned into a film starring Daryl Hannah.
She continued her prodigious research, begun in 1977, for the sequels The Valley of Horses and The Mammoth Hunters, and explored prehistoric sites in Europe, adding to her firsthand knowledge of flint knapping, snow caves, hide-tanning and the preparation of wild foods and medical remedies.
Jean has five children and lives with her husband, Ray, on the Oregon coast. [edit]
