Barr, Robert
Barr, RobertRobert Barr (1849 – 1912) was a British-Canadian short story writer and novelist.

He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and emigrated with his parents to Toronto, Canada, at the age of four, where he went to school at Toronto Normal School.

In later life he became a teacher and the eventual headmaster of the Central School, Windsor, Ontario, from which position he would write short stories and contribute them to the Detroit Free Press.

Many of his short stories were based on first hand experiences, while his later works centre mainly on the crime genre.

In 1876 he left teaching to take up a position at the Detroit Free Press and eventually worked his way through the ranks to become news editor.

Whilst working at that publication his contributions would appear under the name ‘Luke Sharpe’, dating back to his days at school where he would walk past a sign that read, “Luke Sharpe, Undertaker” – an amusing combination of words in their incongruity to Barr.

He later moved to London where he established the weekly English edition of the Free Press and a year later he founded The Idler magazine.

He then retired, and in the 1890s became a more prolific author, producing a book a year. [edit]
