Terry Brooks (January 8, 1944) was born in Sterling, Illinois where he lived for many years. He graduated from Hamilton College with a B.A. in English Literature and later earned a J.D. from Washington and Lee University.
Brooks has been a writer since high school, exploring science fiction, western, fiction, and non-fiction, before being given a copy of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings which inspired him to write in one genre.
He wrote his first novel, The Sword of Shannara, in 1977 and it quickly found its way onto the New York Times bestseller list where it stayed for five months.
He wrote two sequels to this book and then created the Landover novels. He then wrote a four-book series called The Heritage of Shannara and then focussed for the next fourteen years on more Landover books. He then went on to write The Word and Void trilogy.
Brooks would later write a prequel to The Sword of Shannara called First King of Shannara. After this he wrote two series, The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara and High Druid of Shannara, and more recently a third entitled Genesis of Shannara.
Besides writing epic fantasy Brooks has also written two movie novelisations. 23 of his books have appeared on the New York Times bestsellers list and has over 21-million copies of his books in print. [edit]
