Barbara Cartland, the world's most famous romantic novelist, who is also an historian, playwright, lecturer, political speaker and television personality, has written over 250 books.
She has also had many historical works published, as well as several autobiographies, and biographies of her mother and brother, Ronald Carter, who was the first Member of Parliament to be killed in the last war. One of her books has a preface by Winston Churchill.
She has also sung an Album of Love Songs with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1976 Barbara Cartland broke the world record by writing twenty-one books for the year and broke it again in 1977 by writing twenty-four.
In her private life, Barbara Cartland is a Dame of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Chairman of the St John Council of Hertfordshire and Deputy President of the St John Ambulance Brigade and has fought for better working conditions and salaries for midwives and nurses.
She has also championed the cause for old people, had the law altered regarding gypsies and founded the first Romany Gypsy camp in the world. [edit]
