Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947) achieved great notoriety and a sinister reputation as a modern occultist. In his time, he was referred to by the television and the press as 'The Great Beast' and 'The Wickedest Man in the World'.
Crowley not only encouraged these characterisations but added fuel to them with his public profanities and open admission of drug taking and indulgence in sex orgies.
He has been described as egocentric, and even paranoic, and his dabbling with the black arts, his endless mistresses and his various coteries of followers have been widely chronicled.
His writing, however, has received less attention. Some of his work has been described as drug crazed and barely comprehensible, yet he undoubtedly displays vast insight and knowledge of the practice of mysticism and the secret rites of occultism.
He is best known for the novels The Diary of a Drug Fiend and Moonchild, while many of his short stories have appeared in popular horror and occult anthologies. [edit]
