Michael Ende was born in 1929, the son of Edgar Ende, one of Germany's first Surrealist painters.
He started out in life thinking he was going to be an actor, found himself writing for cabaret, and went on to review books for German radio while working on his first story, published in English as Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver. A mixture of fantasy and realism, it features such marvels as a steam engine that sails and a camel on skates, and has sold over a million copies.
This was followed by Momo, a modern fairy story first published in 1973. Momo has been translated into twenty-six languages and was on the bestseller list of Der Spiegel for over two years.
Momo was followed in 1979 by The Neverending Story, an international literary sensation which was made into a major film.
Although Michael Ende's books were originally published for children, he insists that he writes for all ages. 'I have always written what I would like to read,' he says.
He has spent over thirty years reading the mystics, occult and Oriental, and place himself squarely in the Romantic tradition: 'People think that Romanticism is looking at sunsets ... but it is necessary to poeticize the world, otherwise we can't find any values in it.'
Michael Ende lives in the hills south of Rome in what he has named Casa Liocorno - the House of the Unicorn. [edit]
