Loren D. Estleman is a prolific American writer best known for his detective and Western Fiction.
He was born on September 15, 1952 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and educated at Eastern Michigan University, where he graduated in 1974 with a BA degree in English and Journalism.
He was presented with an honorary doctorate in humane letters from this university in 2002.
Loran D. Estleman has written over 65 books and hundreds of articles and short stories, remarkably all on his manual typewriter.
Estleman is most famous for his series of novels about P.I. Amos Walker, and he also created the series characters Page Murdock, an Old West marshal, and Peter Macklin, a hitman.
Among his favourite writers are Jack London, Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Chandler, Edith Wharton and W. Somerset Maugham.
The first short story Estleman sent for publication, when he was fifteen years old, was rejected 160 times over the course of eight years, but he found great success later in life with a large collection of works, each one fastidiously written from the typewriter with which he would spend an average of six hours a day.
He admits to being a slow writer, but says he writes consistently. He refers to the process in which he consumes vast amounts of cheap typing paper while polishing his work “writing for the wastebasket.”
During his career Estleman has been a judge for many literary honours, including the Hopwood Award, presented by the University of Michigan, and has also written numerous book reviews for both the New York Times and The Washington Post.
Estleman currently lives in his hometown Michigan. [edit]
