Parke Godwin is an American writer of fantasy fiction. His novels often contain legendary figures in realistic historical settings.
He was born on 28 January 1929 and published his first novel in 1973, entitled Darker Places. Three years later he produced A Memory of Lions, a novel of the Norman-Saxon Conflict during the conquest, and together with Marvin Kaye he wrote The Masters of Solitude (1978), Wintermind (1982) and A Cold Blue Light (1983).
In 1980 Godwin published the first novel of his Firelord series (with the same name) and then Beloved Exile in 1984 and The Last Rainbow in 1985.
The Firelord series is a retelling of the Arthur legend set in the 5th century amid the collapse of the Roman Empire.
He also retold the Robin Hood story with Sherwood (1991) and Robin and the King (1993). These novels take place during the Norman Conquest (a century earlier than the original telling) and feature the kings William the Conqueror and William Rufus as major characters.
He has also had many of his short stories published in anthologies. His short story Influencing the Hell out of Time and Teresa Golowitz was the basis of an episode of The Twilight Zone.
Godwin has also worked as a radio operator, a research technician, a professional actor, an advertising man, a dishwasher and a maitre d’. [edit]
