Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1946. He won a scholarship to the University of Maine and later taught English while his wife Tabitha got her degree.
He sold his first short stories to Startling Mystery Stories magazine during the 1960's, but it was the publication of his first novel, Carrie, and it's subsequent film adaptation, that set him on the road to becoming the world's Number One horror story writer.
He has also written novels under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman.
He has been described as the first of a new generation of horror writers, building upon the work of earlier contributors to the genre like Algernon Blackwood, Clark A Smith and HP Lovecraft. Other writers like Dean Koontz soon followed his example.
Stephen King is a master of "subtle" horror and he provides much depth of character in his work. The latest trend in horror is a swing to more explicit violence, with writers such as Brian Lumley, Stephen Laws and Shaun Hutson coming to the fore.
Stephen King lives with his wife, Tabitha King, who has also published, and their three children in a small village on the edge of a lake in Maine.
Maine is also the most frequently used location in King's novels, often set in small towns. [edit]
