Fritz Leiber, the son of a noted stage and screen performer, was born in the United States in 1910. A former actor, he has written many science fiction and fantasy stories and contributed to Weird Tales before the Second World War.
Leiber is well known and held in high regard by readers of science fiction and fantasy, he has received several Hugo and Nebula Awards for the former, and is seen as the doyen of fantasy writers, the man who practically invented the sword and sorcery genre as it is known today with stories like the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (Swords) Series.
Most of the leading fantasy writers acknowledge their debt to him, but, as is so often pointed out, what makes Leiber's fantasy adventures special is the strong vein of dry wit that permeates his work. [edit]
