Erich Maria Remarque belonged to a family of French extraction that emigrated into Germany at the time of the French Revolution and settled in the Rhineland.
In 1914, at the age of 18, he went straight from school into the army and was sent to the Western Front. During the course of the war his mother died and all his friends were killed.
At the end of the war he found himself alone in the world. He wrote his book, without taking previous thought, about his own and his friend's experiences in the war. It arose out of the consideration that so many men of his generation, who were yet still young, lived a friendless, embittered, resigned life without knowing why. [edit]
