| Adopt-An-Author.com | | Crime Fiction Authors | Crime has been around since the time of Adam and Eve. Even William Shakespeare wrote about crime in Macbeth. Crime as a modern genre of literature, however, appeared with writer's like Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins in the middle of the 18th century and continued through to the 19th century with Sax Rohmer of Dr Fu Manchu fame, Jacques Futrelle who introduced Professor Van Dusen and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who invented the famous detective Sherlock Holmes.
The tradition of crime writing and whodunnits was continued into the 20th century by authors such as Edgar Wallace and Edgar Rice Burroughs. In the 1920's a new author called Agatha Christie achieved fame with her crime novels which were also focused upon detectives and detecting, as with Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.
George F Worts wrote compelling stories based on jury trials, as did Erle Stanley Gardner. Around 1950 a new type of crime novel appeared in America which featured Private Investigators, PI's, tough detectives such as Mike Hammer by Mickey Spillane. Later, in the sixties, stories concerning the Mafia also became popular and crime began to migrate to spy stories which will more likely be found under Thrillers.
In more modern times, other crime writers have excelled, including Ruth Rendell and PD James. Author's like Patricia Cornwell have focused more on the forensic aspects of crime.
