| Horror Fiction Authors |
The origins of horror fiction are rather obscure. Mary Shelley published Frankenstein around 1820. Bram Stoker was successful with Dracula in 1897. However, the father of modern horror fiction is undoubtedly Edgar Allan Poe who began publishing his own work around 1835. An extremely accomplished writer, Poe inspired other authors, such as Alexandre Dumas, and HP Lovecraft who later spawned a new generation of horror writers such as August Derleth and Ramsey Campbell.
The horror genre languished somewhat during the 1960's and '70's but acquired a new resurgence when bestselling authors Stephen King and Dean Koontz appeared on the scene with more modern horror stories.
The modern horror novel has also become more integrated with fantasy and science fiction genres, for example, in the work of Clive Barker, Brian Lumley and Stephen Laws.
