War literature was made famous in the early twentieth century by Erich Maria Remarque who wrote about his First World War experiences in All Quiet on the Western Front. In 1932, WE Johns began to publish his Biggles stories about a flying ace.
The Second World War has been extensively covered in literature, some writers working with naval and military history, and others writing about various German, British and American generals.
There is also a large amount of fiction dealing with that war, some of the most popular authors being Douglas Reeman and Nicholas Monsarrat.
Authors such as Hammond Innes and Alistair MacLean have also contributed some war literature, as have Sven Hassel and HH Kirst.
